Stan Frazier had an old silo on his farm that he was desperate to get rid of. He didn’t want to pay professional workmen, because they were far too expensive, and thus sought a way to remove the structure himself. Dynamite seemed a bit too risky, so he threaded a sturdy chain through some holes in the bottom of the silo and dragged the length back rapidly. Unfortunately, this only made the tower slump to the side, but otherwise remain standing. Stan thought about the problem some more, and finally decided to use a bulldozer to knock the remainder of the silo over.
There was just one problem with this idea – physics. You see, it turns out if you apply a significant directed pressure to the base of a tall, cylindrical object, it causes the bottom to smash forward and the rest to collapse down on the source of the pressure. This is precisely what happened to Stan, who was unable to reverse the bulldozer in time once he realized what was happening. Miraculously, he managed to escape from the rapidly toppling rubble with just minor injuries. He might not be acquainted with common sense, but lady luck is apparently a good friend of his.
